JAMES LOPARO
My work in fresco is a bridge to an early
self. I have memories of secret marks in wet plaster, scaffolding and walls
too high, rhythmic sounds from a hawk and a trowel, and of men working on
surfaces to define flat and true. I have those memories, my father's tools,
and the need to go beyond the surface.
As a medium, fresco speaks a language of
matter and process that exceeds any preconceived message from the surface. I
seek to use this language to visualize energy, to capture it, to personalize
it, and to hold it suspended for examination.
My bas-relief frescoes explore man's passion
for creation and destruction. By effacing the fresco's surface to reveal its
anatomy, the duality of man is exposed in layered events. These events
parallel natural energy forces that cause architectural changes in mass and
create visual images of time.
In time man will also change. Perhaps we can
evolve beyond the need to self-destruct and achieve our real possibilities. I
can only contemplate this event and know that self-discovery and art are part
of the process.
