My mum's friend J.H. is an artist and we were
having a exhibition of his pictures for an arts festival, that we have every year in the
neighbourhood. And he asked if he could build a sculpture around our swing (in our garden)
for the arts festival too. He said he wanted to make a kind of bower that a type of bird
called a bower bird would make to attract female birds. He also said that what they did
was they gathered lots of little treasures of the same colour and put them inside i.e.
redberries, a red leaf, a small red flower etc...etc, and the bird would dance around them
to attract females. He first built the structure of
it with willow sticks, it looked like kind of a little home with a curved roof, or an arch
with one blocked end, or a small cave. I could just about fit inside if I went in on all
fours.
When it was our gallery day lots of people came to help
John weave in and out and try to fill all the gaps up. I got to help him a bit but it made
your hands really ache after a while trying to squeeze the sticks through the holes. When
it was finished it looked really good and we weaved ribbons in and out of the sticks to
decorate it; that was really fun!
We took photos of it once we had decorated it.
After a while we took it down because
otherwise we couldn't use our swing and we really wanted to. Even though I wanted to use
my swing I still really liked it in our garden.
