The Tresvennack Pillar (Copyright John Hewett 2000)

The Tresvennack Pillar Tresvennack Pillar, the Menhir at
Drift, Penwith, Cornwall.

One of the finest of Cornish Menhirs, 11ft (1.2m) high and set 4ft (1.2m) into the ground. In 1840 a large stone slab was discovered buried some 2ft (0.6m) south of the pillar. This covered a pit in the subsoil, which contained 2 Middle Bronze age urns. One of them was very large and contained cremated human bones, the other contained a powdery substance. The top of the pillar out of reach of man and cattle is covered in a forest of ancient lichens and mosses and appear as if they too are as old as the Bronze age.
